Boston Pizza Serves Up a Slice Of Higher Learning

Awards 33 employees with $1,500 scholarship upcoming school year

September 8, 2011, Toronto, ON – As students head back to school this week, 33 post-secondary students across the country can thank their employer, Boston Pizza, for helping them realize their academic goals.  Since 2007, the Boston Pizza International Scholarship Program has recognized 160 employees for their achievements at work and school, as well as within their local communities, with a $1,500 scholarship.

“Boston Pizza is proud to support the academic aspirations of our employees through our popular scholarship program,” said Caroline Schein, Vice President, People and Operations Development, Boston Pizza International.  “We recognize that our student employees are working with us for only a few years and will go on to work in other industries. The program is consistent with our philosophy of supporting our employees’ pursuit of a post-secondary degree while providing them with valuable life skills as they continue to work with us while going to school.”

This year 33 scholarships were awarded to Boston Pizza employees across Canada in every province. Eligible applicants were subject to a rigorous evaluation process that involves an academic review based on actual transcripts, an internal evaluation from their General Manager, and a personal essay submission.  A national scholarship committee evaluates the submissions and helps select the deserving recipients.

“With more than 340 locations, Boston Pizza is one of this country’s largest youth employers and we strongly believe in supporting education and development,” explained Schein. “The scholarship program is designed to help students along their path to higher learning, and is just one of the ways we help our employees strike a balance between their work-life at Boston Pizza and their studies.”

Recipients of the Boston Pizza International Scholarship Award each receive $1,500, for a total of $49,500 in scholarships granted in 2011.
