Boston Pizza International’s commitment to improving broiler chicken welfare

Update August 2024: More than 75% of the chicken we source is processed utilizing a multi-step controlled-atmosphere-system (CAS) and we are working with our suppliers to get to 100% by 2026. Additionally, 56% of the chicken we source meets NFACC’s standards for stocking density of 31 kg/m2.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, June 1, 2017 - Boston Pizza is proud to announce our commitment to improving conditions for broiler chickens in Canada. The most critical issues are as follows: welfare outcomes resulting from fast-growing strains/breeds of chickens; environment in facilities that house chickens; manner in which chickens are processed; and space allotted to each chicken.

We will ensure by 2024 that 100 percent of our chicken served in Canadian restaurants is produced according to the Global Animal Partnership (GAP) standards. We will also ensure by 2024 that all chickens in our supply system are processed in a manner that avoids live-dumping and live-shackling and instead utilizes a pre-shackle, multi-step controlled-atmosphere processing system that’s widely hailed as less cruel. We will demonstrate compliance with the above standards via third-party auditing.
